Depictions of cattle domestication, potentially linked to religious rituals and emerging agricultural settlements, appear in cave paintings from around 8500 BCE. The Code of Hammurabi (c. 1754 BCE), a Babylonian legal text, includes regulations on livestock ownership, leasing, and animal health, highlighting the economic significance of animal husbandry in Mesopotamian society. These early references challenge the notion of animal husbandry as a purely utilitarian endeavor; rather, they reveal complex relationships shaped by evolving social structures and prevailing ideologies.
